About the event
What can a simple introductory wargame teach us about the fundamentals of design? In this workshop, we’ll use Strike Force One, a classic SPI hex-and-counters game, as a lens to explore time, space, adjudication, and perception management.
We’ll start by playing a few rounds of the original game, examining how play value and player management are built into its design. Then, participants will break into teams to reimagine the game around a new concept: whether that’s lunar combat, nuclear Multi-Domain Operations, operational MDO, or even person-to-person conflict.
Afterward, teams will reconvene to share their designs and the lessons uncovered along the way.
Dr. Ed McGrady, an award-winning designer, teacher, and longtime leader in professional wargaming, will guide the discussion and highlight the design insights that emerge, connecting this playful exercise to broader questions in the field.
